I-81 follows U.S. Route 11 from east of Knoxville, Tennessee to north of Watertown, New York. Interstate 81 does not enter metropolitan areas. Rather, it serves smaller cities such as Roanoke, Staunton, Harrisonburg, and Winchester, Virginia; Hagerstown, Maryland; Harrisburg and Scranton, Pennsylvania; and Binghamton and Syracuse, New York.

Interstate 64: I-64 connects the St. Louis, Missouri metropolitan area to the Hampton Roads, Virginia, metropolitan area. Along its path, Interstate 64 connects to East St. Louis, Illinois; Evansville, Indiana; Louisville, Kentucky; Charleston, West Virginia; and Richmond, Virginia. Interstate 64 forms half of the Tidewater area's "belt system" in the Norfolk-Hampton Roads area.

Interstate 77: I-77 connects the eastern Great Lakes region with Appalachia and the Southeast. It serves the cities of Columbia, Charlotte, Charleston, Akron, and Cleveland.

Interstate 79: I-79 runs from north to south linking Erie Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh, Morgantown, and Charleston along the U.S. 19 corridor.
