Harrisonburg, Virginia, Truck Accident Lawyers

The Ritchie Law Firm recovered $2.725 million dollars in a Harrisonburg, Virginia, truck accident case.  In this case, the injured person, who we will call “Jane,” was from West Virginia and had traveled to Harrisonburg to attend appointments.  She was stopped at a stop light in Harrisonburg when her car was rear-ended by the driver of another vehicle, who we will call “Bob.”  After the rear-end collision, “Jane” got out of her vehicle and stood on the sidewalk waiting for police.  As she was standing on the sidewalk, a large, city-owned truck approached and struck the rear of “Bob’s” vehicle, causing it to hit the curb, jump the sidewalk, and hit Jane who was standing nearby.

Serious Brain Injuries

“Jane” was seriously injured.  She lost consciousness after being hit. She was taken by ambulance to Rockingham Memorial Hospital until she was stabilized and as then transported by helicopter to the University of Virginia Medical Center.  At UVA, “Jane” was told she had two fractured ankles, three fractured ribs, and a permanent brain injury with a subdural hematoma.

After arriving at UVA, Jane’s neurological condition deteriorated, and she was not able to answer any questions coherently.  A CT scan showed she had bleeding on the brain.  Once that condition was stabilized, Jane had surgery on her broken ankles.

After the accident, Jane was well aware of her deficits and the differences in her abilities since her injury.  Jane stated, “I used to do all this, what happened, I can’t even do this” when referring to reading and other similar tasks.

Extensive Medical Treatment Needed

Jane’s recovery was slow and she needed extensive medical treatment.  Her short-term memory, tasks of daily living, and judgment were all impaired.  While Jane’s verbal and hearing skills were intact, she had significant difficulty with finding the right words.  She experienced great difficulty with object naming, sentence completion, open-ended questions and repetition.

Truck Accident Statistics

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, in 2017, 4,889 truck and buses were involved in fatal crashes.  This represents a 9 percent increase from 2016.  Since its low in 2009, the number of large truck and bus fatal crashes has increased by 42%.

In fact, from 2016-2017, the number of large truck and bus fatalities per 100 million miles traveled by all motor vehicles increased by 6.8%.  Also, from 2016 to 2017, the number of large trucks involved in fatal crashes increased 10 percent, from 4,251 to 4,657.  The number of large trucks involved in injury crashes increased by 5 percent from 102,000 to 107,000.

1) How long have you been in practice?

2) Do you have actual experience handling truck and tractor trailer accident cases?

3) Can I read about your track record of case successes and recoveries in truck and tractor trailer injury cases?

4) Have you published any books or guides for consumers?  (Check out our firm’s “Your Rights After a Serious Auto Accident” book here)

5) Are you board certified?*
