Inattentive Driving Accidents

Inattentive driving is a major cause of car accidents. Inattentive driving happens when a driver doesn’t use care in watching the road for various reasons, some of which may include:

  • looking at a cell phone
  • attending to children
  • picking up something from the floor
  • changing the radio station
  • programming GPS
  • many others

Even though cell phone usage is thought of as the primary cause of distracted driving, inattentive drivers were causing accidents long before cell phones were ever invented.

Inattentive Driving Risk

Nearly 3,000 people are killed each year in the United States as a result of inattentive driving.  In addition to vehicle occupant deaths, there are an additional 600 pedestrians, bicyclists, and others, who are killed each year by distracted drivers.

Inattentive driving is especially dangerous if the driver:

  • fails to notice changes in speed limits
  • misses an exit or carelessly crosses through traffic lanes
  • fails to notice hazards on the roadway
  • fails to notice approaching sirens
  • fails to notice children playing nearby
  • fails to stop for a school bus stop or for flashing lights
